The Secretariat facilitates the implementation of the Continental Plan of Action of the African Decade of Persons with Disabilities. The African Decade was proclaimed by the African Union for the period 1999-2009. One of the main goals of the Decade is to raise awareness about the situation of the estimated 80 million persons with disabilities living in Africa. The African Decade is a collaborative initiative involving the African Union, African governments, UN Agencies and other organizations working with disability and development.
